I am writing this on President’s Day which has had me contemplating. We are honoring men (so far) who have made a difference in the lives of our ancestors and ultimately in our own. It seems today that all of the news we are hearing is pretty devastating. Horrible weather, earthquakes, violence against others, unemployment, environmental degradation, species going extinct…..where’s the silver lining we have always been promised? I guess the answer to that is that it is where we make it…nothing short of our own actions will bring the remedies that we need to stave off a total loss of hope.
We need to stop asking what someone else is going to do to fix the problems and begin to take action ourselves. We need to wake up every morning knowing that we are going to act…that we are going to do something that very day. The distinction is that we need to decide to act positively. If it is a conscious decision, and we make it every day ….we will have a positive impact on our existence. If everyone would make that decision we could have a cumulative effect that could change the world….be gone with the doom and gloom!
And, here’s a place to start. We got our first orphan of the season in this past week…..seems way too early to me, but it is a reality in the form of a gawky baby great blue heron. That means lots and lots of fish, and fish are one of the most expensive food items for us to supply. It is hard to budget for food because we can never predict how many of each species is going to present themselves to us for care or how long we will have them. If you choose to take a positive stand you could sign up to volunteer in our seasonal orphan care department. If you don’t have the time or inclination to do the hands on thing, perhaps you might make a monthly donation directly from your bank to ours….no pain….not even noticeable….a few less lattes a week could make a big difference in the lives of hungry baby animals. Or you could make a direct donation by check or through our web site. You could join us at one of our upcoming fundraisers, Born 2Be Wild, a bike rally or Wishes for Wildlife, an auction and dinner (www.wishesforwildlife.com ).
There are certainly other ways to positively act…stay up on current issues, be thoughtful, and be proactive regarding things that call out to you. The main thing is that you can’t do just one thing and rest on your laurels. It needs to be an everyday conscious decision with the intent to make life better for another being, for the planet, for our joint existences. It needs to become a habit, second nature to you.
Know that even if we can’t all be President, we can all make a difference….a positive difference. It is ultimately up to us to do it….now! Hey….can you hear that baby begging for fish?
